UN reinforces, Congress = Corruption
Corruption in India is not uncommon, and we have learnt to live with it. Indeed, to get matters done or to escape petty fines, we befriend Corruption. But what if the Legislature itself is corrupt?
Congress governments are generally more corrupt than other governments, this is kind of a trend. This is perhaps because it is the oldest party and corruption has become a habit.
The latest scam to hit them is the UN report that accuses the Congress party and our Cabinet Minister, Natwar Singh, of bribing Saddam Hussein for oil. Singh has reacted calling it baseless and untrue. But the Left brigade has asked the Govt. to probe the matter. Our Prime Minister has responded in a juvenile way by abrogating Natwar Singh of any wrongdoing! This is quite surprising of a man who draws immense respect from all Indians.
BJP has caught on tightly to their one ray of hope - poor souls, they have lost their will to be the Opposition after the internal fighting that has left their party many-headed, but none with any clear authority - and are gunning for Natwar Singh’s neck!
The reactions are all more-or-less along expected lines. But I did not anticipate the Left parties to be this mature. They have rightly asked for a national probe, which is the way forward. But both the BJP’s and Manmohan Singh’s reactions are immature and disappointing.
Meanwhile, Rediff has found a businessman in Iraq who testifies against Natwar Singh and his son. The allegations are of course serious and require further investigation.
Coming back to my statement that Congress is equivalent to Corruption. Their dalliances with the State Governors is very well known. First, in Goa they unconstitutionally overthrew the BJP and came into power, after which they made it constitutional by holding elections.
Second, in Jharkhand they invited their own party to form Govt. when it was clearly short of a majority and the BJP was clearly holding a majority. They withdrew only after being nationally shamed.
Third, the Buta Singh controversy. When the NDA could clearly form a Govt., he dismissed the Assembly forcing new elections thereby wasting billions of rupees. And this has been ruled unconstitutional by the Supreme Court!
Fourth, only last week the SC has been outraged that many people who do not hold any position in Delhi are still occupying Govt. bungalows there against the rules. This includes many from the Congress, CPI as well as the BJP.
What is the solution to all this high-level corruption that the common man has no way of fighting? All we can do is file cases in the SC and sit and wait…and wait…
